The college recruiting process can feel overwhelming, but players do not have to navigate it alone. Rage Softball is committed to helping our student-athletes and their families understand the process, prepare the right materials, communicate with college coaches, and find schools that fit their academic, athletic, and personal goals.

Every athlete’s recruiting journey is different. Success begins with being proactive, staying organized, working hard in the classroom, and communicating directly and professionally with college coaches.

Players interested in competing at the collegiate level should begin by thinking about what they want from their college experience.

Consider the following:

• Preferred academic programs and possible majors

• School size and campus environment

• Geographic location

• NCAA, NAIA, or junior-college opportunities

• Athletic level and potential playing opportunities

• Financial considerations

• Personal and family priorities

The best college fit is one that supports the student-athlete academically, athletically, socially, and financially.

Each player should create and regularly update a recruiting profile that serves as her athletic and academic résumé. 

College coaches should be able to quickly find the information they need to evaluate the player and contact her.

A recruiting profile should include:

• Full name and graduation year

• Primary and secondary positions

• Height and relevant athletic measurements

• High school name and location

• Rage team and coach’s contact information

• GPA and available test scores

• Academic interests or intended major

• Current tournament schedule

• Skills video and game footage

• Athletic and academic accomplishments

• Player contact information

• Links to recruiting and softball social-media accounts

Players should use a professional email address that they check regularly. A simple format such as 

FirstNameLastNameGradYear@gmail.com is recommended.

A recruiting video should quickly show a player’s athletic ability and softball skills. Begin the video with the player’s name, graduation year, position, team, and contact information.

Depending on the player’s position, footage may include:

• Hitting from multiple angles

• Fielding and throwing

• Pitching mechanics and game pitches

• Catching skills and pop times

• Footwork, speed, and base running

• Short clips from tournament games

Keep the video focused and easy for coaches to watch. Place the strongest footage near the beginning and clearly identify the player in game clips

Players—not parents—should take the lead when communicating with college coaches. Messages should be personal, concise, and professional.

An introductory email should include:

• The coach’s name and college

• Why the player is interested in that school

• Graduation year and position

• High school and travel-team information

• GPA and academic interests

• Upcoming tournament schedule

• A link to the player’s recruiting video or profile

• Contact information for the player and Rage coach

Players should research each program before contacting its coaching staff. Avoid sending the same generic message to every school.

Parents play an important supporting role throughout the recruiting process. They can help their athlete stay organized, discuss academic and financial considerations, visit campuses, and evaluate potential opportunities.

Whenever possible, players should lead conversations with college coaches. This allows coaches to see the athlete’s maturity, independence, communication skills, and genuine interest.
